Smithfield aquires KC Sausage Company
Smithfield formed a joint venture with KC Sausage and its sister company, Pine Ridge Farms, already in February 2013. The agreement enabled Smithfield to expand its breakfast and dinner sausage categories, which generated 4 billion USD in retail and food service sales at the time. Kansas City Sausage has operations in Des Moines, Iowa and Kansas City, Missouri. In Des Moines, the company produces premium raw materials for sausages, as well as value-added products, including boneless hams. The Kansas City plant is designed to service retail and foodservice customers.
In 2015, Smithfield and Kansas City Sausage announced plans to build a big pork processing plant on the site of the former Martin’s Abattoir at a cost of 44.8 million USD. Construction on the new facility was completed in 2016. Approximately 1,000 sows per day are processed at the facility to make 50 million lbs of pork sausage annually.
Now this full acquisition support the growth of Smithfield Foods of several key packaged meats categories, including breakfast and fresh dinner sausage, as well as Italian-style meal solutions like meatballs. Kansas City Sausage produces some of Smithfield Foods’ fastest-growing products, including Breakfast Sausage, Craft Collection Seasonal Brats and specially Carando Meatballs. Carando Meatballs are currently boasts to the fastest selling fresh meatball in the United States.
