WH annouce aquisation of romania meat producer
WH Group, the world's largest pork producer, announced plans to acquire packaged meat manufacturing and distribution assets from two Romanian companies for an undisclosed price. WH Group's wholly-owned unit Smithfield entered into share-purchase agreements to acquire all of Elit and Vericom, the company said in a statement to the stock exchange.
Elit and Vericom operate three packaged meats manufacturing facilities and five distribution centers in Romania. They sell about 25,000 metric tons of packaged meats each year to 12,000 customers through a nationwide distribution network.
The deals are conditional on obtaining anti-monopoly approval from the relevant regulatory authorities, it added. Smithfield, a U.S.-based pork processor, expanded into Romania in the late 1990s and operates the country's largest slaughterhouse, with a processing capacity of 600 heads per hour, according to its website. Smithfield produces fresh pork meat and semi-processed pork meat under the "Comtim" brand, Smithfield Foods said on its Romanian website.
Just in August, WH Group Smithfield acquired Pini Poland, as part of its expansion efforts in Europe.
